In celebration of New Jersey STEM Month, the Woodbridge Public Library expanded its programming to provide additional opportunities for the community to engage in hands-on STEM learning. Building on a town-wide DIY Birdhouse Decorating Contest led by the mayor, the library used grant funding to offer free birdhouse kits, allowing patrons to participate in the contest while exploring creativity and basic design concepts. The initiative connected community engagement with STEM in a fun and accessible way.
Throughout the month, the library also transformed its train table into a rotating series of STEM challenges that encouraged collaboration and problem-solving. Weekly activities invited patrons to build barns and fences for farm animals, design dinosaur parks, construct towers and bridges, and create road systems connecting different town locations—all using Magna-Tiles. To further extend learning beyond scheduled programs, the library introduced new STEM kits available for in-house use, designed for a wide age range from toddlers to teens. These efforts created an inclusive, interactive environment that sparked curiosity and encouraged ongoing participation in STEM activities.
