The STEAM Expo at University High School was a vibrant celebration of innovation, collaboration, and student excellence, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. Thoughtfully organized and executed, the event highlighted the power of interdisciplinary learning while showcasing the remarkable talents of students across all grade levels.
The program opened with a warm welcome from Vice Principal, Dr. Cromwell, who set the tone for an inspiring and engaging experience. The audience was then introduced to the keynote speaker by Iguosa Iyamu, whose poise and professionalism reflected the school’s commitment to student leadership. The keynote address, delivered by Mr. Leonard V. Jones, captivated the audience with a powerful motivational message centered on perseverance, purpose, and the importance of pursuing excellence. His recognition as one of The Best Lawyers in America© and a National Bar Association “40 Under 40” honoree added a layer of prestige and inspiration to the event.
Following the keynote, Imani Mainer delivered a heartfelt message of appreciation, acknowledging the collective efforts of students, staff, and community members who made the Expo possible. The energy in the room continued to build as sophomore students took the stage for a dynamic Physics-Inspired Fashion Show. This creative showcase blended science and art, as students acted out physics concepts in visually stunning and intellectually engaging ways.
Following proceedings in the auditorium, the gymnasium was transformed into a hub of discovery, as attendees, including administrators, parents, community partners, and teachers, engaged in walkthroughs of student projects. Freshman students, guided by Ms. Riaz and Dr. Okwuchukwu, presented research on disease conditions, demonstrating both scientific understanding and real-world application. Sophomores, under the direction of Mr. Gonmiah, impressed visitors with hands-on physics demonstrations such as the Gravity Table and Egg Drop Experiment. Juniors, led by Mr. Morrison, showcased a creative heat exchange demonstration through the chemistry of making ice cream, blending science with an engaging sensory experience. Seniors brought critical thinking to life through a simulated crime scene in their forensics demonstration, guided by Mrs. Kelly.
Additional exhibits included law-focused insights from Professor Cantanese, and contributions from the Teachers’ Academy led by Mr. Bowles. The Expo also featured creative and analytical displays in art and mathematics, led by Ms. Graham and Ms. McGlynn respectively. The success of the STEAM Expo was further supported by the invaluable contributions of Mr. Dixon, Ms. Neal, and Mr. McKnight, whose work behind the scenes ensured a seamless and visually engaging experience.
Overall, the STEAM Expo was more than an event; it was a powerful demonstration of what happens when education is student-centered, interdisciplinary, and purpose-driven. It not only celebrated academic achievement but also inspired a community to envision the limitless possibilities of learning.
