Hosting Organization: Latinas in STEM
County: Hudson
The West New York Board of Education hosted the Latinas In STEM Foundation’s “From the Earth to the Stars, Over the Moon With Barbie” event on March 28, 2026, at the district’s middle school. The event invited the public to explore a wide range of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics projects developed by students, while also highlighting the growing impact of women—particularly Latinas—in STEM education and careers.
The initiative was inspired in part by Barbie’s collaboration with the Latinas In STEM Foundation, which honored the career of Ellen Ochoa through the creation of a special edition doll. The broader mission is to spark early interest in STEM among young girls and empower them to pursue careers in fields historically dominated by men.
Throughout the free community event, attendees experienced firsthand the progress of the district’s STEM and STEAM initiatives by engaging with student projects and interactive displays. Latina guest speakers from the business community also shared their personal journeys, offering powerful examples of how STEM education can open doors to meaningful and successful careers.
