Pi Point Pi Day Pi Eating Contest

Hosting Organization: High Point Regional High School

County: Sussex

High Point Regional High School celebrated Pi Day with a vibrant, schoolwide Pi Eating Contest, which drew participation from more than half the student body. Throughout the day, students experienced engaging and creative activities in each math classroom, and many proudly wore custom T-shirts designed by a member of the Math Department. The event was filled with laughter, mathematical discourse, friendly competition, prizes, candy, and gift cards.

The celebration was intentionally crafted to use math as a catalyst for energy, curiosity, wonder, and joy—an effort to counter the frustration and negativity that students often associate with the subject.

In the weeks leading up to March 14, the High Point Math Department collaborated to brainstorm ideas, develop plans, and organize activities that would unite the school community. Students were invited to participate in the Pi Eating Contest through surveys, and staff members joined in by purchasing themed shirts. On Pi Day, the entire school came together to support and cheer on participants, creating an atmosphere of school spirit and shared excitement.

Prizes and giveaways were cleverly themed around circles or words containing “Pi,” and each math classroom operated as an “open house,” allowing students to explore a variety of mathematical concepts and experiences in an engaging, welcoming environment.
