On April 6, the Edison Public Library hosted its annual STEM Summit, a day designed to inspire curiosity, promote innovation, and introduce students to the vast possibilities within science, technology, engineering, and math. The event brought together students, educators, and professionals for a dynamic experience filled with hands-on activities, engaging discussions, and valuable learning opportunities.
The summit opened with a thought-provoking panel discussion focused on the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI). Panelists included a professor and researcher from the City University of New York and a Senior Software Engineer from Google. Although a pediatric pulmonologist from Robert Wood Johnson Hospital was originally scheduled to join the conversation, they were unable to attend due to a last-minute work conflict. Despite the change, the discussion remained insightful and impactful.
The panelists explored the increasing influence of AI across various STEM fields, highlighting the need for ethical and responsible implementation. They offered students practical advice on how to engage with AI thoughtfully, encouraging them to consider the broader implications of technological advancement and to use innovation as a force for good.
Following the panel, attendees were invited to participate in a range of hands-on activity stations that brought STEM concepts to life. In the robotics zone, students interacted with platforms such as FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge), LEGO Spike Prime, and Finch robots—testing their programming skills and collaborating to solve challenges. At the biology and chemistry stations, participants conducted simple experiments and explored scientific principles in fun and approachable ways, fostering curiosity through direct engagement.
A standout moment of the day was the student research symposium, where high school students who had conducted research in academic or industry labs presented their findings. These young scientists shared their experiences, explained their methodologies, and described the obstacles they overcame throughout their research journeys. Several students even offered live demonstrations, making complex topics more accessible and inspiring younger attendees to pursue their own STEM interests.
The Edison Public Library’s STEM Summit successfully blended education, innovation, and inspiration. Through interactive learning and authentic student experiences, the event provided a powerful platform for cultivating the next generation of scientists, engineers, and thinkers.
