Kids Coding with Kids

Hosting Organization: Hackettstown Computer Science Club

County: Warren

Hackettstown High School recently hosted a dynamic four-session coding event that brought together students in grades 5 through 8 from across the district and its sending areas. Held in the BC hallway, the program introduced younger learners to computer science through engaging, hands-on experiences using the visual programming language Scratch and the physical computing platform Micro:bit.

To meet a range of skill levels, the event offered three distinct learning pathways. Students new to coding explored foundational concepts through Scratch Basics, creating animations and interactive stories. Others were introduced to Micro:bit, where they programmed circuit boards to display messages, play games, and complete interactive challenges. More experienced participants took part in Advanced Scratch, tackling complex concepts such as music integration, pen tools, and lists. Throughout the program, high school computer science club members served as mentors, leading lessons, guiding activities, and creating a supportive, peer-driven learning environment.

The event culminated in a final showcase where students presented original games and projects to peers and families, celebrating their progress and creativity. Rooted in inclusivity, the program welcomed students of all backgrounds and abilities, including those receiving special education services and those historically underrepresented in STEM. Each participant received a certificate and commemorative t-shirt, marking not only their technical achievements but also the collaborative spirit and inspiration that defined the experience.
