Edelman Planetarium at Rowan University
The Fredric and Jean Edelman Planetarium at Rowan University seeks an assistant to assist with programming, planning, and organization of activities for the Edelman Planetarium.
Rowan University is a comprehensive state-designated research institution that is located in Glassboro, N.J. The centerpiece of its Science Hall is certainly the Edelman Planetarium. The theater projection system is a Digistar 6 SP2HD in a 40-foot dome with 102 seats, installed in 2018. It has a 5.1 audio system, a laser projection system from Laser Fantasy, and an “inset projector” for presentations and regular movies. The observatory features a 0.4-m telescope and a suite of CCD cameras.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Presents planetarium programs for college classes, schools, community groups, and the public;
Operates and maintains the planetarium technical equipment, including high-definition digital video projectors, network of three computers for the Evans and Sutherland Digistar 6 system, cove lighting system, and Laser Fantasy laser projector and computer;
Supervises and trains part-time student employees in planetarium operation;
Coordinates public outreach events and open houses in the observatory;
Produces planetarium shows and content;
Provides administrative assistance;
Works with students and club members on using planetarium equipment for special events;
Performs other duties assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy or related field required;
One (1) year of professional experience (preferably in a planetarium, public outreach, or the equivalent);
Demonstrated ability to work with a wide-ranging age of visitors;
Excellent writing and speaking skills.
Experience with telescopes preferred;
Experience producing planetarium shows or similar digital content preferred.
Ability to communicate modern research in astronomy and physics to diverse audiences;
Willingness to work a flexible schedule that will include weekends and evenings as needed.
Salary Range: Commensurate with Experience
