During NJ STEM Month each March, organizations across New Jersey come together to inspire students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. As part of this statewide initiative, HISPA hosted a Youth Conference focused on immersive STEM learning and career exploration.
Held on March 9, 2026, at Montclair State University, the conference welcomed 104 middle school students from Passaic, NJ for a full day of hands-on experiences—many visiting a college campus for the first time. The event, themed “Take Action! Achieve Your Dreams,” was co-sponsored by the university’s Office for Hispanic Initiatives and co-hosted by Prudential Financial, with additional support from the New Jersey STEM Pathways Network through funding from the Overdeck Family Foundation.
Throughout the day, students participated in interactive workshops led by professionals from Citi, Merck & Co., Prudential Financial, and Verizon. These sessions provided hands-on opportunities to explore real-world STEM applications while building critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Volunteers from PSEG further highlighted how STEM careers impact industries and communities.
The conference also featured a college and career panel, where professionals shared insights into their educational and career journeys across STEM fields. The program included opening remarks from leaders in education and industry, along with a keynote address by Gian Paul Gonzalez, who encouraged students to stay committed to their goals.
By connecting students with professionals and providing firsthand exposure to a college environment, the event helped demystify both higher education and STEM careers. Participants left with a stronger understanding of STEM opportunities and greater confidence in their ability to pursue them—reflecting the broader mission of NJ STEM Month to expand access, spark curiosity, and empower the next generation of innovators.
