FIRST Tech Challenge New Jersey State Championship
FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) is a robotics program designed for youth – 13-18 who want to learn in a team-based, mentor guided
environment, while competing head to head against other FTC teams, using a sports model. Teams of up to 15 students are
responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot
kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors, and
volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Teams are required to keep
an engineering notebook and the contents are reviewed and judged at competitions. Awards are given to achieving and winning
robots at competitions, and for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.
The FIRST Tech Challenge New Jersey State Championship is the culmination of 6 months of innovation, design, and learning for 52 teams from throughout New Jersey. The event usually sees attendance of 400-500 students, and 200-300 friends and family supporters. It is organized and run by ~100 dedicated, non-paid volunteers who put in countless hours to ensure that the students have a fun and rewarding experience – not only on the day of the Championship, but throughout the 6 month FIRST Tech Challenge season.
