Hosting organization: Girl Scouts Service Unit 303 Cherry Hill – Haddonfield – Merchantville
Total Attendees: 50
On Friday, March 24, 35 Cadette and Senior level Girl Scouts celebrated both Women’s History Month and New Jersey STEM Month by attending Service Unit 303’s Women in STEM event. The Girl Scouts, representing 5 different troops and Juliettes, started with a hands-on activity to make their own light-up name tags by constructing a simple circuit using copper tape, mini-LED lights, and batteries.
After enjoying dinner, the Girl Scouts split into groups and rotated through Roundtable Discussions with six different women in STEM careers. Roundtable discussions, rather than a traditional panel discussion, provided a smaller, more comfortable setting for the Girl Scouts to have conversations with the accomplished group of STEM role models, listed below. Attendees asked questions and heard about what each woman’s job looks like day-to-day, the education and career pathways that led her to her current position, and what inspires her in her work. The night finished up with a sweet treat of apple cider donuts, and participants picked up their newly-earned STEM Career Exploration badges on their way out.
